Holy Passion-Bearer King John-Vladimir of Serbia

Commemorated: June 4 (May 22, Old Style)

Life

John Vladimir ruled Duklja, a Slavic principality on the Adriatic coast in today's Montenegro and Albania, around the year 1000. According to the Chronicle of the Priest of Duklja, a later source of uneven reliability, the Bulgarian Tsar Samuel defeated him and held him prisoner at Prespa. There Samuel's daughter, Kosara, took pity on him, and Samuel released him and gave her to him in marriage.

After Samuel's death, his nephew Ivan Vladislav, who had taken the Bulgarian throne, had John Vladimir killed in 1016 at the gate of a church at Prespa, although he had come under a promise of safety (the calendar gives 1015). The Church honours him as a passion-bearer, one who accepted death without resistance.
