Holy Martyrs Peter, Dionysius, Andrew, Paul, and Christina, who suffered under emperor Decius
Commemorated: May 31 (May 18, Old Style)
Life
Peter, a young man of Lampsacus on the Hellespont, was arrested in the persecution of Decius, c. 250, refused to sacrifice to Venus, and was tortured on a wheel and beheaded. Soon after, the proconsul Optimus tried Andrew and Paul, two soldiers from Mesopotamia, and a Christian named Nicomachus, who gave way under torture and sacrificed.
According to their Passion, a sixteen-year-old girl in the crowd, Christina, cried out against his denial, declared herself a Christian, and was handed over to be dishonoured, but was not harmed. The next day the townspeople stoned Andrew, Paul and Dionysius, another prisoner, and Christina, who ran to their bodies, was beheaded.
