Holy Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus in Syria

Commemorated: July 1 (June 18, Old Style)

Life

According to their Passion, Leontius was a Greek officer who lived at Tripoli in Phoenicia under the emperor Vespasian (69–79). The governor Adrian sent the tribune Hypatius to arrest him. The account tells that Hypatius fell ill with fever, was told in a dream to call on "the God of Leontius", and recovered. He and his friend Theodulus then asked Leontius to baptize them. Adrian had Hypatius and Theodulus beheaded, and Leontius was tortured and stretched on stakes until he died. The text says it was written by an eyewitness, and that Leontius was buried near the harbour of Tripoli.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
