Holy Hierarch Theodore the Sykeote, Bishop of Anastasiopolis

Commemorated: May 5 (April 22, Old Style)

Life

Theodore was born in the village of Sykeon, about twelve stades from Anastasiopolis in Galatia. As a boy he was drawn to fasting and prayer, and from the age of fourteen he lived on a hill by a church of St George, later in a cave. He became known for healing the sick and driving out evil spirits. His Life records that he foretold to the general Maurice that he would be emperor, and when Maurice became emperor he invited him to Constantinople.

Theodore was made bishop of Anastasiopolis. His Life says he longed to leave the office and, after a long argument with the metropolitan of Ankara, he was allowed to go back to his monastery. He died there in 613 after prophesying about future events.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
