Commemorated: January 13 (December 31, Old Style)
Life
Peter Mohyla (Movilă) was born in 1596 into a Moldavian princely family; his father Simion ruled Wallachia and then Moldavia. He was educated at the Lviv brotherhood school, served for a time as a soldier and then became a monk. In 1627 he was elected archimandrite of the Kyiv Caves Lavra, and in 1632 he founded the Kyiv college, later the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, which taught Latin and Greek on the model of the colleges of his day.
From 1633 he was metropolitan of Kyiv. He restored St Sophia Cathedral, published a large book of services in 1646 and promoted the Orthodox Confession of Faith approved at Iași in 1642. He died on 31 December 1646 and was canonized in 1996.
