Holy Hierarch Mark, Archbishop of Ephesus
Commemorated: February 1 (January 19, Old Style)
Life
Mark Eugenikos was born in Constantinople about 1392, the son of a deacon. He became a monk, lived for some years on an island in the Sea of Marmara, and in 1437 was made metropolitan of Ephesus. He took part in the Council of Ferrara and Florence (1438–1439), called to unite the Eastern and Western Churches, and was the only bishop who refused to sign its decree of union. Back in Constantinople he kept up his opposition and died there in 1444. The Orthodox Church remembers him for that refusal.
