Holy Hierarch Macarius (Nevsky), Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna
Commemorated: February 29 (February 16, Old Style)
Life
Mikhail Nevsky was born in 1835 into the poor family of a church reader in the Vladimir region; the family moved to Tobolsk, where he finished the seminary. In 1855 he joined the Altai Mission in Siberia, learned the Altai language and, with the translator Mikhail Chevalkov, translated prayers and services into it. He took monastic vows as Macarius, later headed the mission and became bishop of Tomsk. People called him the 'Apostle of the Altai'.
In 1912 he was made Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna. After the February Revolution he was retired in 1917 and sent to the Nikolo-Ugreshsky monastery. He died in 1926 at Kotelniki near Moscow and was glorified in 2000.
