Orthodox · † 582
Holy Hierarch Eutychius, Patriarch of Constantinople
Commemorated: April 19 (April 6, Old Style)
Life
Eutychius was born in the Phrygian village of Divine (Theion) to a soldier's family, was baptized by his grandfather, a priest, and later became a monk and archimandrite of the monasteries of the diocese of Amasea. Called to Constantinople for the Fifth Ecumenical Council in place of his sick metropolitan, he was chosen Patriarch of Constantinople in 552 under Emperor Justinian and took part in the council of 553.
In 565 he came into conflict with the emperor over a doctrinal edict and was exiled to his old monastery in Amasea, where he lived for about twelve years. Justinian's successor Justin II returned him to his throne on 3 October 577. He died in the week after Easter 582, on Thomas Sunday, and Emperor Tiberius is said to have followed him four months later.
