Holy Hierarch Euthymius, Archbishop of Novgorod

Commemorated: March 24 (March 11, Old Style)

Life

Euthymius, baptized John, was the son of a priest of Novgorod. At fifteen he became a monk at the Vyazhishchi monastery of St Nicholas near the city, and later he was abbot of the monastery on Lisya Gora. In 1429 the people of Novgorod chose him archbishop by lot, drawn on the altar of St Sophia.

Since Russia then had no metropolitan, he waited over four years for consecration, which he received from Metropolitan Gerasimus in Smolensk in 1434. He rebuilt and restored many churches after the fires of 1431 and 1442 and richly adorned the cathedral of St Sophia. He died on 11 March 1458 and was buried at Vyazhishchi; he was canonized in 1549.
