Holy Hierarch Arsenius, Archbishop of Serbia
Commemorated: November 10 (October 28, Old Style)
Life
Arsenius came from Syrmia (Srem) and became a monk at Žiča, the seat of the Serbian Church, under St Sava, its first archbishop. Sava made him abbot of Žiča and in 1233 chose him as his successor.
Arsenius led the Serbian Church for some thirty years, and in his time the see was moved from Žiča, exposed to raids, to Peć in Kosovo, where he built the church of the Holy Apostles, the core of the later Patriarchate of Peć. He died in 1266 and was buried at Peć.
