Holy Apostles Bartholomew and Barnabas

Commemorated: June 24 (June 11, Old Style)

Life

Bartholomew was one of the Twelve; many identify him with Nathanael of Cana. According to his Life, he preached with Philip in Asia Minor, and at Hierapolis in Phrygia Philip was crucified while Bartholomew survived. He went on to Armenia, where tradition holds he was flayed and crucified at Albanopolis. Offered camels laden with gold by a king whose daughter he had healed, he is said to have sent them back, saying he sought human souls, not riches.

Barnabas, a Levite from Cyprus, sold a field and laid the money at the apostles' feet. He vouched for the newly converted Saul in Jerusalem, worked with him in Antioch and travelled with him on the first missionary journey. Tradition holds he was stoned at Salamis in Cyprus, where his tomb was found in the 5th century.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
