Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke
Commemorated: October 31 (October 18, Old Style)
Life
Luke, by early tradition a native of Antioch in Syria, was a physician (Col 4:14) and a companion of the Apostle Paul; the “we” passages of Acts suggest that he travelled with him and stayed with him during his imprisonment. He is the author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles.
An ancient prologue says that he never married and died at eighty-four in Boeotia in Greece; his tomb is shown at Thebes, and in 357 his relics were brought to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. Tradition also makes him the first painter of icons of the Mother of God.
