Holy and All-praised Apostle Philip

Commemorated: November 27 (November 14, Old Style)

Life

Philip, one of the Twelve, came from Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee, the town of Peter and Andrew. The Gospel of John tells that Jesus called him with the words “Follow me”, and that Philip then brought Nathanael to Jesus. John also shows Philip at the feeding of the five thousand, when Jesus asks where bread can be found, and as the one to whom some Greeks came, asking to see Jesus.

Later tradition says he preached in Syria and Asia Minor, travelling with Bartholomew and his own sister Mariamne. At Hierapolis, the Life tells, he angered the townspeople, who crucified him and Bartholomew; Philip is said to have died first, probably at an advanced age, around 81–96. Tradition holds that Bartholomew went on to Armenia and Mariamne to Lycaonia.
