Hieromartyrs Patrick the Bishop of Prussa and the Priests Acacius, Menander, and Polyenus

Commemorated: June 1 (May 19, Old Style)

Life

Patrick was bishop of Prusa in Bithynia, c. 100. His Passion tells that he was arrested with three of his presbyters, Acacius, Menander and Polyenus, and taken in chains to the hot springs near the city, where the governor Julius bathed and sacrificed to Asclepius. Julius pointed to the healing waters as proof of the gods' power.

Patrick answered that the springs were the work of the one God who made the world. According to the account, he was thrown into the hottest part of the spring and was unharmed. He and his three presbyters were then beheaded on 19 May.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
