Hieromartyrs Nicander, Bishop of Myra, and Hermes the Presbyter

Commemorated: November 17 (November 4, Old Style)

Life

Nicander and Hermes are remembered as a bishop and a priest of Myra in Lycia, ordained by the Apostle Titus according to their Life. They won many pagans to the Christian faith and were arrested and brought before the count Libanius.

When he failed to make them renounce it, they were dragged behind galloping horses, jailed without food, hung up and scraped with iron, and thrown into a furnace. The Life says an angel cooled the fire. At last nails were driven into their heads, hearts and bellies and they were buried alive in a pit. The Church counts them among the martyrs of the first age of Christianity.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
