Hieromartyrs Hermolaus, Hermippos, Hermocrates of Nicomedia

Commemorated: August 8 (July 26, Old Style)

Life

Hermolaus, Hermippus and Hermocrates were priests of the church of Nicomedia in Bithynia, hiding from persecution under Maximian. According to the account in St Dimitry of Rostov’s collection, Hermolaus met the young physician Pantaleon, taught him about Christ and baptized him. When Pantaleon was arrested and was asked who had taught him, he named Hermolaus. The three priests were brought before the court, confessed Christ and were beheaded c. 305, shortly before Pantaleon. Their story is told in the Life of Panteleimon, whose commemoration follows on 27 July.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
