Hieromartyrs Basil, Ephraim, Eugene, Elpidius, Agathodorus, Aetherius, and Kapiton of Cherson
Commemorated: March 20 (March 7, Old Style)
Life
The Church remembers together seven bishops of Chersonesus in the Crimea. According to their Life, Basil and Ephraim were sent from Jerusalem around the turn of the 4th century. Ephraim went on to the Scythians of the Danube and was beheaded; Basil preached in Chersonesus, was driven out to a cave on a nearby mountain, and was later dragged through the streets by a hostile crowd and killed. Eugene, Elpidius and Agathodorus, who came after him, were killed in the same way a year later.
Under Constantine the bishop Aetherius won protection for the Christians of the city from the emperor and died at sea on the way back. His Life tells that his successor Capiton stood unharmed in a burning furnace. Capiton later drowned at the mouth of the Dnieper.
