Orthodox · † 312
Hieromartyr Lucian, Presbyter of Antioch
Commemorated: October 28 (October 15, Old Style)
Life
Lucian was a priest and scholar of Antioch who founded an influential school of biblical study there and prepared a revised text of the Greek Old Testament, known as the Lucianic recension, used for centuries in Antioch and Constantinople.
In the persecution under Maximinus Daia he was taken to Nicomedia, where, according to Eusebius, he defended his faith before the authorities and died in prison after torture, on 7 January 312. Tradition says his body was thrown into the sea and washed ashore at Drepanum, which Constantine later renamed Helenopolis and where a church was built over his grave.
