Hieromartyr Irenæus the Bishop of Sirmium in Hungary
Commemorated: April 8 (March 26, Old Style)
Life
Irenaeus was the young bishop of Sirmium in Pannonia (today's Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia) during the persecution under Diocletian and Maximian. Arrested by soldiers, he was brought before the governor Probus and ordered to sacrifice. He refused, even when his parents, his household and his friends came to the court, embraced his feet and begged him to spare his youth.
After tortures and a long imprisonment he was again beaten and condemned to be thrown into the river. Irenaeus said he had expected harsher torments, and the angry governor ordered him beheaded first. On the bridge, after praying for the church of Sirmium, he was beheaded and his body thrown into the Sava, on 26 March 304.
