Hieromartyr Hierotheos, Bishop of Athens

Commemorated: October 17 (October 4, Old Style)

Life

Hierotheus is known only from tradition. It holds that he was a member of the Areopagus in Athens, was converted by the Apostle Paul and became bishop of Athens, and that he was the teacher of Dionysius the Areopagite, who quotes his hymns in the writings that bear his name.

His Life tells that he was present with the apostles at the burial of the Mother of God and sang hymns as her body was carried to the tomb. He died in the 1st century; tradition calls him a martyr.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
