Hieromartyr Euthymius, Bishop of Sardis
Commemorated: January 8 (December 26, Old Style)
Life
Euthymius was born about 754 in Asia Minor and in the 780s became metropolitan of Sardis. He took a leading part in the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, which restored the veneration of icons. About 804 Emperor Nicephorus I deposed him and exiled him to the island of Pantelleria off Sicily.
When the Iconoclast emperors revived their policy, Leo V and Michael II had him arrested, flogged and exiled again for refusing to give up icons. Older sources say he died of a flogging in 824; modern research dates his death to 26 December 831, on an island off the coast of Bithynia, under Emperor Theophilus.
