Hieromartyr Eusebius, Bishop of Samosata

Commemorated: July 5 (June 22, Old Style)

Life

Eusebius was bishop of Samosata on the Euphrates and a firm supporter of the Nicene creed in the years when the emperors Constantius and Valens favoured the Arian party. According to his Life, he proposed Meletius for bishop of Antioch, and when an imperial messenger demanded the signed document of that election, he refused to hand it over even under threat to his hand. Under Julian he travelled in disguise as a soldier through Syria and Palestine, appointing clergy and bishops. Valens sent him into exile in 374, and the people of Samosata followed him to the river. Recalled by Gratian, he was fatally struck c. 380 by an object thrown from a roof while installing a Nicene bishop at Doliche. He asked that no one take revenge.
