Hieromartyr Eleutherius, Bishop of Illyria, and his mother Martyr Anthea and Martyr Corivus the Eparch
Commemorated: December 28 (December 15, Old Style)
Life
Eleutherius was the son of Anthia, a Christian woman of a noble Roman family, and according to his Life he became a bishop in Illyricum at the age of twenty. In the reign of Hadrian (117–138) he was brought to Rome for trial. The Life tells that he was laid on a red-hot iron bed, put into boiling oil and thrown to lions without harm, and was finally killed with a sword; his mother was killed beside his body.
Corivus, a prefect, was converted by him and beheaded as well. The Roman Martyrology remembers Eleutherius and Anthia on 18 April and places them at Messina.
