Orthodox · † 362
Hieromartyr Dorotheus the Bishop of Tyre
Commemorated: June 18 (June 5, Old Style)
Life
Dorotheus was bishop of Tyre in Phoenicia. During the persecution of Diocletian he left his see and hid; when Constantine gave peace to the Church, he returned and led his flock again. He was a learned man, and tradition credits him with writings in Greek and Latin, including lives of the prophets and apostles.
Under Julian he fled once more, but was seized at Odyssopolis (Varna) on the Black Sea and died under torture c. 362. His Life says he was 107 years old. Butler notes that some old sources call him a priest rather than a bishop.
