Hieromartyr Clement, Bishop of Ancyra, and Martyr Agathangelus
Commemorated: February 5 (January 23, Old Style)
Life
Clement was born in Ancyra in Galatia to a pagan father and a Christian mother, Euphrosyne, who raised him in the faith. According to his Life, he was made bishop of Ancyra when he was no more than twenty. In the persecution of Diocletian he was denounced and sent from one judge to another: to Rome, to Nicomedia, to Tarsus and back to Ancyra.
In Rome a young Christian, Agathangelus, joined him and shared his imprisonment and tortures; he was later beheaded. Clement's Life says his trials lasted twenty-eight years. He was finally beheaded c. 312 while celebrating the Liturgy on a Sunday in a cave church near Ancyra, together with two of his clergy, and was buried beside Agathangelus.
