Hieromartyr Arcadius, Priest

Commemorated: July 14 (July 1, Old Style)

Life

Arkady Garyaev (1878–1918) was born in Verkhnyaya Tura in the Urals, the son of a priest. After serving as a psalm-reader and a deacon he became a priest and worked at Petropavlovsk and Nikito-Ivdel, where he did missionary work among the Mansi people. From 1914 he served at the church of St Nicholas in the village of Borovskoye and taught at the village school.

In July 1918, in the Civil War, a group of Red Guards accused him of counter-revolution after he had conducted weddings. They are said to have made him dig his own grave and killed him with bayonets, on 1 July (14 July New Style). He was buried on 11 July. The Russian Church glorified him as a New Martyr in 2000.
