Hieromartyr Antipas, Bishop of Pergamum and Disciple of St John the Theologian

Commemorated: April 24 (April 11, Old Style)

Life

Antipas was bishop of Pergamum in Asia Minor and is named in the letter to Pergamum in the Book of Revelation, where he is called a faithful witness who was killed in that city. According to his Life, he was a disciple of John the Theologian and was put to death under Emperor Domitian.

The city's pagan leaders accused him of keeping people away from the sacrifices and blamed him for the gods leaving the city. He answered that he was a Christian and would not obey the emperor's order. His Life tells that he was thrown into a heated bronze bull at the temple of Artemis and died praying. The Pergamenes buried him in the city. Tradition places his death around AD 68, though the dating is uncertain.
