Hieromartyr Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedia, and those with him: Theophilus the Deacon, Dorotheus, Mardonius, Migdonius, Peter, Indis, Gorgonius, Xeno, Domna the Virgin and Euthimius
Commemorated: September 16 (September 3, Old Style)
Life
Anthimus was bishop of Nicomedia, the eastern capital of the Roman emperor, when the great persecution began around 303. According to his Life, a Christian tore down the imperial edict posted in the city and was the first to die. A fire in the palace was then blamed on Christians, and many were executed or drowned.
Anthimus hid in a nearby village and wrote letters to the prisoners; his deacon, caught with them, was put to death. When soldiers came to arrest the bishop, he fed them and then told them who he was; they offered to let him escape, but he refused to make them lie and went with them. He was beheaded on 3 September. Among those killed with him were Dorotheus, Mardonius, Migdonius, Peter, Indis and Gorgonius, and Domna, who buried the drowned.
