Hieromartyr Alexander, Bishop of Jerusalem

Commemorated: May 29 (May 16, Old Style), December 25 (December 12, Old Style)

Life

Alexander was a bishop in Cappadocia who was imprisoned for his faith under Septimius Severus. About 212 he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where the clergy kept him as assistant to their aged bishop Narcissus, the first known case of a bishop being moved to help another. Later he led the church of Jerusalem alone and founded a library there, which the historian Eusebius used a century later.

A friend of Origen since their student days in Alexandria, he invited him to preach and ordained him a priest. In the persecution of Decius he was taken to Caesarea and died in prison there about 251.
