Consecration of the Church of the Great Martyr George at Kiev

Commemorated: December 9 (November 26, Old Style)

Life

The church of the Great Martyr George in Kyiv was built by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, whose baptismal name was George, together with a men's monastery, in the years c. 1051–1054. Tradition says that Metropolitan Hilarion, the first native-born head of the Kyivan Church, consecrated it on 26 November 1051 (Old Style).

The anniversary was observed as a feast and, in Russian, was known as “autumn St George's Day”. In Muscovite Rus the days around it later became the time when, under the Sudebnik of 1497, peasants were allowed to leave a landowner. The feast of the dedication of this church remains in the Orthodox calendar.
