Apostles of the Seventy Carpus and Alphæus
Commemorated: June 8 (May 26, Old Style)
Life
Carpus is named among the Seventy disciples sent out by Christ. Tradition identifies him with the Carpus of Troas, with whom Paul left his cloak (2 Timothy 4:13). According to the Life, he travelled with Paul and carried his letters to the churches, and became bishop of Beroea in Thrace. He is said to have been killed there by hostile crowds.
Alphaeus is remembered as the father of the apostle James and of Levi, whom tradition identifies with the apostle Matthew. According to the Life, he came from Capernaum; where he preached is not known.
