Apostles of the 70: Stachias, Amplias, Urban, Narcissos, Apellias and Aristoboulos

Commemorated: November 13 (October 31, Old Style)

Life

Stachys, Amplias, Urban, Narcissus, Apelles and Aristobulus are all named among those whom the Apostle Paul greets in the last chapter of his Epistle to the Romans (16:8–11); Paul calls Amplias “my beloved in the Lord”, Urban “our fellow worker” and Apelles “approved in Christ”.

Later tradition counts them among the Seventy and gives each a see. It makes Stachys the first bishop of Byzantium, ordained by the Apostle Andrew, and holds that Amplias and Urban died as martyrs, Narcissus served in Athens, Apelles at Heraclea, and Aristobulus, said to be a brother of Barnabas, preached in Britain. These accounts cannot be verified.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
