Apostles of the 70: Herastos, Olympos, Rodion, Sosipater, Quartus and Tercias

Commemorated: November 23 (November 10, Old Style)

Life

These six men are named in the greetings at the end of Paul's letter to the Romans (Romans 16), and tradition counts them among the seventy apostles. Tertius is the one who says there that he wrote the letter down. The others are Olympas, Herodion (Rodion), Sosipater, Erastus and Quartus.

Tradition says Olympas followed Peter to Rome and was beheaded under Nero on the day Peter was crucified, and that Herodion, a kinsman of Paul and bishop at Patras, shared his fate. Sosipater is remembered as bishop of Iconium, who died in old age. Erastus is said to have been a deacon and treasurer of the Church at Jerusalem and later bishop of Paneas, and Quartus bishop of Berytus (Beirut), where he died in peace.
