Apostle Timothy of the Seventy

Commemorated: February 4 (January 22, Old Style)

Life

Timothy, the son of a Greek father and a Jewish mother, Eunice, came from Lystra in Asia Minor and became Paul's closest companion. Paul calls him "my beloved and faithful son in the Lord", names him as co-author of several letters and addressed two letters to him; in one he tells him to drink a little wine for his stomach instead of only water. Tradition holds that Paul made him the first bishop of Ephesus.

According to his Life, during the Ephesian festival called the Katagogia, when crowds in masks danced through the streets with idols and clubs, Timothy went out to preach against it and was beaten and dragged until he died, c. 97. In the 4th century, under Emperor Constantius, his relics were brought to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, beside those of Andrew and Luke.
