Apostle Simon Zealotes
Commemorated: May 23 (May 10, Old Style)
Life
Simon, called the Zealot, is one of the Twelve Apostles; the Gospels give little more than his name and his surname, which may point to zeal for the Law or to the Zealot movement. A tradition retold by Dimitry of Rostov makes him a native of Cana in Galilee and the bridegroom at the wedding where Jesus turned water into wine, who then left everything to follow him.
Accounts of his later preaching differ. Some traditions send him to Egypt and North Africa, and even to Britain; others, to the Caucasus or to Persia, where he is said to have been martyred. According to the tradition Dimitry follows, he was crucified.
