Apostle Quadratus of the Seventy [his service is sung on the 22nd]

Commemorated: October 4 (September 21, Old Style)

Life

Quadratus is counted among the seventy disciples sent out in the Gospel of Luke. Church tradition says he preached in Athens and Magnesia, and that he was a bishop. Eusebius, in the fourth century, names a Quadratus who presented a written defence of the Christian faith to Emperor Hadrian, perhaps in 124 or 125; only a fragment of it survives. Eusebius says he was a disciple of the apostles' generation.

Whether the apostle, the bishop of Athens and the writer were one man is debated. The Church dates his death to about 130; his service is sung on the 22nd.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
