Apostle Philip, of the 70, one of the 7 Deacons
Commemorated: October 24 (October 11, Old Style)
Life
Philip was one of the seven men chosen by the Jerusalem community to serve at its tables (Acts 6). After the death of Stephen he preached in Samaria, and on the desert road to Gaza he explained Isaiah to an Ethiopian court official and baptized him (Acts 8).
He then settled in Caesarea, where years later the Apostle Paul stayed in his house; Acts (21:8–9) notes that Philip had four unmarried daughters who prophesied. Tradition holds that he later became bishop of Tralles in Asia Minor and died there in peace.
