Apostle Matthias

Commemorated: August 22 (August 9, Old Style)

Life

Matthias was chosen by lot to take the place of Judas among the Twelve (Acts 1:21–26); he had followed Jesus from the baptism of John to the Ascension. Of his later life the sources disagree. The Greek tradition retold by St Dimitry says he preached in Judea and further afield and was finally condemned by the high priest Ananus and stoned in Jerusalem, c. 63; other traditions place his preaching and death in Ethiopia or Colchis. The Roman Martyrology says simply that he preached in Judea and suffered martyrdom.
