Life
In 1578, during the wars between Muscovy and Sweden in the time of the Livonian War, Swedish troops seized and plundered the Valaam Monastery on Lake Ladoga. Thirty-four of its monks and novices, among them Titus, Tikhon, Gelasius, Sergius and Barlaam, were killed. The Church remembers them as venerable martyrs. After repeated Swedish raids the islands stood almost deserted for many years.
