Saint Margaret of Scotland

Commemorated: November 16

Life

Margaret was born about 1045 in Hungary, where her father, the English prince Edward the Exile, had been sent in his childhood; she was a great-granddaughter of King Æthelred. After the Norman conquest of England her family fled north, and about 1070 she married King Malcolm III of Scotland. Her confessor Turgot, who wrote her Life, tells that she read to her unlettered husband, fed orphans and poor people at her own table every day, and founded a ferry across the Forth for pilgrims to St Andrews, still remembered in the town names North and South Queensferry. She founded the priory of Dunfermline. Three of her sons became kings of Scotland. She died at Edinburgh Castle on 16 November 1093, days after Malcolm and their eldest son were killed in battle, and was canonized in 1250.
