Carpenter and builder
Hebrew charash · Greek tektōn · a craftsman in wood, sometimes also in stone
Houses in Israel were usually small, with rooms around a courtyard and flat roofs laid on wooden beams, and ordinary families often built them themselves. The carpenter made the timber framework, the roof beams, doors and windows. Large works — palaces, the temple, city walls — needed specialists, and carpenters worked side by side with masons and stonecutters (2 Kings 12:11–12). For David’s palace the craftsmen and the cedar came from Tyre, and timber for the second temple was again brought from Lebanon by sea to Joppa (Ezra 3:7). Isaiah lists a woodworker’s tools: a measuring line, a stylus, chisels and a compass (Isaiah 44:13).
In the Gospels Jesus is called “the carpenter” (Mark 6:3) and “the carpenter’s son” (Matthew 13:55). The Greek word tektōn means a builder or craftsman, usually in wood but also in stone. By one view Joseph and Jesus worked mostly with timber; by another they were builders more broadly, and some scholars suggest they found work in nearby Sepphoris, which Herod Antipas was rebuilding at the time. A tradition recorded by Justin Martyr in the 2nd century says Jesus made plows and yokes.
Key verses
Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. Then they would put the counted money into the hands of those who supervised the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn would pay those doing the work—the carpenters, builders, masons, and stonecutters. They also purchased timber and dressed stone to repair the damage to the house of the LORD, and they paid the other expenses of the temple repairs. They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre to bring cedar logs from Lebanon to Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia. The woodworker extends a measuring line; he marks it out with a stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He fashions it in the likeness of man, like man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a shrine.“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us as well?” And they took offense at Him.Sources
