The First Denial of Saint Peter (Premier reniement de Saint Pierre)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Peter stands in the doorway of the high priest’s courtyard with his hand on his chest, protesting. A servant girl in a red dress turns and points at him, and another woman below raises her hands.
At the right, soldiers sit huddled against the wall in the night. Above the door Tissot painted plaques with writing, and the brown walls glow faintly.
From the text

- “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered (John 18:17)
