Jesus Before Herod (Jésus devant Hérode)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
In a courtyard before Herod’s palace, the soldiers and servants make fun of Jesus. One throws a white striped robe over him, others pull at him, a boy at the left raises a stick, and men tumble on the ground laughing.
Herod, in a gold robe, watches from the balcony above with his court, and others sit on the steps. Jesus stands silent in the middle of the noise.
