The Calling of Saint Peter and Saint Andrew (Vocation de Saint Pierre et Saint André)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Two fishermen stand knee-deep in the lake, seen from close behind, working a net between them. Tissot gave them short trousers, rough shirts and a belt pouch for the catch; the water is painted in quick grey and white strokes.
On the shore at the left, small and in white, Jesus stands and calls. One of the brothers has just turned his head and lifts a hand to it.
