The Calling of Saint John and Saint Andrew (Vocation de Saint Jean et de Saint André)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
In a dry valley with a stream and bare golden hills, Jesus walks towards us wrapped in a white mantle. Two men hurry after him: an older one in a striped red robe and a younger one in green with a white cloak.
Jesus has just turned his head and raises a finger as he speaks to them. Tissot set many of these first meetings outdoors, in landscapes like those he sketched in Palestine.
