The Crucifixion

Albrecht Dürer · c. 1497–1500
The Cleveland Museum of Art

This Crucifixion is one of the early Large Passion woodcuts, cut about 1497–1500. It is built almost symmetrically around the cross.

The sun and the moon look down from the upper corners, and angels fly beside the arms of the cross holding cups. Below, Jesus’ mother sinks to the ground among the women and John, and at the right a rider in a plumed hat looks up.

From the text

  • The notice posted on the cross (John 19:19)
  • His mother, the women and the disciple whom he loved near the cross (John 19:25–26)

The artist’s own

  • Angels catching drops in cups, a custom of painters of the time
  • The sun and the moon with faces in the corners, as old pictures of the Crucifixion showed them
  • A skull and bones at the foot of the cross — painters often added them, after the name “The Place of the Skull” (John 19:17)
